Why us
A freight forwarder that also handles household moves
Our background is complex logistics coordination, and relocation shipping is one of the services that grew out of that work. That combination matters more than it sounds. Most international relocation quotes come from a removals company that subcontracts the freight, or from a forwarder that subcontracts the packing. Somewhere in the handover between the two, the inventory stops matching the customs declaration and the delivery date stops meaning anything.
We do the survey, the packing plan, the booking, the customs entry and the delivery with one coordinator across all of it — the same way we handle a commercial container. You get one point of contact who can answer both “where is my shipment” and “why has biosecurity asked about the garden furniture”.
- One coordinator from survey to final placement
- Customs and biosecurity handled by the same team that moves the goods
- Sole-use container, shared container and air freight priced side by side
- A valued inventory that works for both the customs entry and the insurance
- Honest volume estimates — we would rather survey properly than quote low and revise
Options
Choosing the right mode for a household move
| Option | Typical volume | Speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air freight | Up to a few cubic metres | Days | Essentials you need immediately, or a small consignment where the cost of waiting is high |
| Shared container (LCL) | Up to ~15 cbm | Slowest — add 2–4 weeks each end | Studio and one-bedroom moves, partial moves, budget-driven timelines |
| Sole-use 20ft container | ~25–30 cbm loaded | Fastest sea option | Two to three bedroom homes; sealed at your door, opened at your new one |
| Sole-use 40ft container | ~55–65 cbm loaded | Fastest sea option | Family homes with furniture, appliances and outdoor items |
| Container plus air split | Any | Mixed | Send a small air consignment to live on while the container is at sea |
If a vehicle is part of the move, read vehicle shipping first — the import approval requirement changes the sequence of the whole move. For smaller consignments of personal effects our personal effects shipping page covers the detail.
Process
How a relocation runs, end to end
Survey and scope
We assess the volume, the access at both ends, what needs professional packing, what should not travel at all, and what needs special handling — pianos, artwork, safes, oversized furniture, outdoor items.
Quote and mode decision
Sole-use container, shared container and air freight priced side by side, with the origin services, destination services, clearance and delivery included so you are comparing complete costs.
Packing and inventory
Professional packing where you want it, a numbered inventory that becomes both your customs document and your insurance schedule, and a valued list you complete for cover.
Loading and departure
Container loaded at your home for sole-use moves, or collection to our warehouse for consolidation on a shared move. Export formalities completed and the shipment booked on a confirmed sailing.
In transit
Vessel tracking with proactive updates. If a sailing is rolled you hear from us with a revised plan and a revised delivery window, not silence.
Customs and biosecurity
For inbound moves we lodge the declaration, apply the concessional treatment where you qualify, and manage the biosecurity inspection that most household consignments receive — including any treatment or cleaning direction.
Delivery and placement
Delivery to your new address, unloading, unwrapping and placement room by room, reassembly of what we dismantled, and removal of packing debris.
Biosecurity
What Australian biosecurity looks for in a household shipment
Almost every household consignment arriving in Australia is inspected. That is normal and it is not a sign anything is wrong — but the items below are what turn a routine inspection into a treatment order and a delay, so deal with them before you pack.
| Item | What to do before packing |
|---|---|
| Outdoor furniture, BBQs, garden tools | Clean off all soil and plant matter; hose and dry thoroughly |
| Bicycles, prams, sporting equipment | Clean tyres, wheels and frames; remove grass and mud |
| Camping and hiking gear, boots | Clean soles and pegs; dry tents completely |
| Vacuum cleaners | Empty and clean — dust and seeds inside are a common finding |
| Lawn mowers and garden machinery | Empty fuel, clean the deck and blades completely |
| Wooden items, bark, cane and wicker | Declare; untreated timber and bark attract close attention |
| Pot plants, soil, seeds, dried flowers | Do not pack these; they will not be permitted |
| Food, honey, herbs, spices | Declare everything; many items are prohibited and honey is restricted |
| Animal products, feathers, hides, shells | Declare; some require permits or are prohibited |
| Firearms, ammunition, replicas | Do not pack; these require separate authorisation and cannot travel with effects |
Insurance
Cover, and why the inventory matters more than the policy
A carrier’s liability under a bill of lading is limited by weight, not by value, and it will not come close to replacing a household’s contents. Marine transit insurance is a separate arrangement and we strongly recommend it on every international move.
What decides whether a claim is straightforward is the inventory. A valued, itemised list prepared before shipment, with photographs of anything valuable or already damaged, settles most claims quickly. A list that says “box of kitchen items” does not. Insurers also generally exclude damage to the contents of cartons packed by the owner, so if something is genuinely valuable, have it packed professionally.
FAQ
International relocation questions
How much does an international relocation cost?
The two variables that matter are volume and mode. A shared-container (LCL) move of a small flat is a very different number from a sole-use 40ft container of a family home. Beyond volume, cost is driven by access at both ends, whether you need full packing, whether the destination requires quarantine inspection, and storage at either end. We survey the volume properly rather than guessing from a room count, because an underestimated volume is how relocation quotes turn into arguments.
How long does it take to move household goods overseas?
Door to door, allow roughly 6 to 10 weeks to or from Europe and the UK, 5 to 9 weeks to or from North America, and 4 to 7 weeks to or from Asia for a sole-use container. Shared-container moves take longer because they wait for a consolidation to fill and then wait again at a deconsolidation depot — often adding 2 to 4 weeks at each end. Air freight for a small urgent consignment is days rather than weeks.
Can I bring my household goods into Australia duty free?
Concessional treatment is available for personal and household effects that you have owned and used overseas for a qualifying period before arrival, where you are migrating or returning to Australia. New goods, goods bought shortly before departure, alcohol, tobacco and motor vehicles are treated differently. The concession is not automatic — it depends on your circumstances and a correct declaration, so tell us your full situation and we will explain what applies.
What can I not ship in a household move?
Every destination has its own prohibitions, but the recurring ones are firearms and parts, ammunition, explosives and fireworks, flammable liquids and gases, aerosols, paint and solvents, pool chemicals, LPG bottles, illicit substances, some seeds and plant material, ivory and other protected wildlife products, and asbestos-containing items. Food, alcohol, wooden items, outdoor furniture and sporting equipment are not prohibited but attract biosecurity attention. We give you a destination-specific list before you pack.
Should I use a shared container or take a full container?
Under roughly 15 cubic metres, a shared container is usually cheaper. Above that, a sole-use 20ft often costs little more than the LCL equivalent and is considerably faster and safer because the shipment is sealed at your home and not handled again until delivery. For a full family home, a 40ft is standard. We will price both so it is a decision rather than an assumption.
Do you pack for me, or do I pack myself?
Both are possible. Full packing by professional packers gives you a proper inventory, better protection and a much stronger position on any insurance claim. Owner-packed cartons cost less but insurers generally will not cover damage to the contents of a carton they did not pack. Fragile items, artwork, mirrors and electronics are worth having packed professionally regardless of what you do with the rest.
Is insurance included?
It is not automatic and the carrier’s liability is limited to an amount that will not replace your belongings. We arrange marine transit insurance based on a valued inventory you prepare. Take the time over the inventory — an accurate valued list is the difference between a straightforward claim and a frustrating one.
Can you move my car and my pets too?
Vehicles yes — see our vehicle shipping page, and note that a Vehicle Import Approval must be in place before a vehicle is shipped to Australia. Pets require a specialist animal transport provider working to the destination’s veterinary and quarantine requirements, and we will coordinate timing with a provider rather than pretending it is a freight service.
What happens at the destination?
For inbound moves to Australia we lodge the customs declaration, manage the biosecurity inspection that most household consignments receive, arrange any treatment required, and then deliver, unload and place items room by room, with debris removal. For outbound moves our destination agent does the equivalent, and we stay involved rather than handing you over.
