Customs Broker Brisbane
Import declarations, tariff classification, duty and GST, free trade agreement claims and biosecurity, managed in Brisbane by the same team that moves your freight.
Clearance that keeps pace with the vessel
Customs clearance is rarely the part of a shipment that importers want to think about, and it is almost always the part that decides whether the container leaves the wharf on time. Classification, valuation, origin evidence and biosecurity all have to be right before arrival, not worked out afterwards.
We manage customs clearance for Brisbane importers and exporters with licensed customs brokers, covering commercial imports, personal effects, temporary imports and export declarations. Because the same team arranges your freight, the entry is prepared while the vessel is still at sea rather than starting when it berths.
Import declarations
Lodgement of full import declarations with the Australian Border Force, including valuation, classification and calculation of duty, GST and the import processing charge.
Tariff classification
Correct HS classification of your goods under the Australian Harmonized Tariff. Getting this right protects your duty position and your compliance record.
Free trade agreement claims
Checking eligibility and origin documentation under agreements including ChAFTA, AANZFTA, AUSFTA, JAEPA, KAFTA, A-UKFTA and ANZCERTA to reduce or remove duty legitimately.
Biosecurity and quarantine
Managing Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry requirements including documentation, inspection bookings, treatment and fumigation at approved Brisbane sites.
Permits and restricted goods
Identifying goods needing permits or approvals before arrival — food, therapeutic goods, chemicals, electrical equipment, timber and more.
Export declarations
Preparation and lodgement of export declarations and supporting documentation for Queensland exporters.
What it costs
Duty, GST and charges on a Brisbane import
Australian import costs are calculated from the customs value of the goods, not simply the invoice total.
| Component | How it is calculated | Typical rate |
|---|---|---|
| Customs duty | Applied to the customs value, based on tariff classification and country of origin | 0% or 5% for most goods; higher for some categories |
| Goods and services tax | Applied to the value of the taxable importation: customs value plus duty plus transport and insurance | 10% |
| Import processing charge | Per declaration, varying by consignment value and lodgement type | Set by the Australian Border Force |
| Biosecurity charges | Documentation assessment, inspection, and treatment if directed | Varies by commodity and direction |
A correct free trade agreement claim can remove the duty line entirely on eligible goods. We check eligibility on every shipment where an agreement may apply, and tell you what origin evidence your supplier needs to provide.
Avoidable problems
What actually delays clearance in Brisbane
- Commercial invoices missing a proper goods description, so classification cannot be confirmed.
- Packing declarations absent or incorrect, triggering a container inspection for timber packaging.
- Free trade agreement claims made without valid origin documentation from the supplier.
- Undeclared timber, bamboo, straw, seed or plant material inside otherwise ordinary consignments.
- Goods requiring a permit that nobody applied for until after the vessel arrived.
- Values understated or freight and insurance omitted from the declared customs value.
Every one of these is preventable with a document check before the goods ship. That review is part of how we work, not an extra service.
Customs broker Brisbane FAQs
Do I need a licensed customs broker to import into Australia?
You are not legally required to use one, but commercial imports need a correctly lodged declaration and the liability for errors sits with the importer. Most businesses use a licensed broker because the compliance risk and the time cost of getting it wrong outweigh the fee.
How long does customs clearance take?
A clean entry with complete documentation is often processed quickly, sometimes within hours of lodgement. Delays come from documentation queries, biosecurity referrals, inspections and treatment, which can add days.
What documents do you need from me?
Generally a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, packing declaration, and any permits, certificates or origin declarations relevant to the goods. We will tell you exactly what applies to your commodity.
Can you help me reduce duty legitimately?
Yes. Accurate tariff classification, correct valuation and properly evidenced free trade agreement claims are the three legitimate levers. We look at all three rather than accepting whatever rate was applied last time.
What happens if my container is selected for inspection?
It is directed to an approved arrangement site where the container is opened and examined, and treatment may be ordered. We arrange the booking, manage the site and keep you informed on timing and cost.
Do you clear personal effects and household goods?
Yes. Unaccompanied personal effects have their own concession rules and documentation requirements, including declarations about the goods and your residency.
