Sea Freight Brisbane

FCL and LCL ocean freight into and out of the Port of Brisbane, with wharf slotting, container transport and customs clearance handled by one team.

Ocean freight through Fisherman Islands

Almost every container that arrives in Brisbane passes through Fisherman Islands, the reclaimed peninsula at the mouth of the Brisbane River where the container, bulk and vehicle terminals sit. Getting a box off that peninsula efficiently is a scheduling exercise as much as a transport one, and it is where a lot of importers quietly lose money.

We arrange sea freight on both import and export legs: booking space with the carrier, managing origin consolidation, lodging the Australian entry, securing a vehicle booking slot at the terminal, transporting the container to your site or to an unpack depot, and returning the empty before detention starts running.

Full container load (FCL)

20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube containers taken direct from the terminal to your premises. Best value once you are filling roughly 15 cubic metres or more.

How FCL works →

Less than container load (LCL)

Your cargo consolidated with other shippers at origin and deconsolidated at a Brisbane depot. Ideal for trial orders, slower-moving lines and smaller businesses.

How LCL works →

Out-of-gauge and specialised

Flat racks, open tops, breakbulk and roll-on roll-off for machinery, structures and anything that will not fit inside a standard box.

Oversized freight →

Terminals and equipment

What sits between the vessel and your warehouse

Understanding these steps is the difference between a shipment that lands smoothly and one that accrues charges nobody budgeted for.

Container terminals

Brisbane’s container terminals are operated by DP World, Patrick and Hutchison Ports. Each runs its own vehicle booking system, and slot availability drives when your container can realistically be collected.

Empty container parks

Once unpacked, the empty must be returned to a nominated park within the carrier’s free time. Park congestion and redirections are one of the most common causes of unexpected detention charges.

Unpack depots and quarantine sites

If your cargo needs inspection, fumigation or a depot unpack, it goes to an approved arrangement site in the Australia TradeCoast precinct rather than straight to you.

Container options and what fits

40ft standard67 m³Up to ~26 tonnesVolume cargo: furniture, packaging, plastics

Flat rack / open topVariesVariesMachinery, vehicles, structures exceeding door dimensions
Capacities are indicative. Always check the actual container specification and road limits before loading.

Weight limits on the water are rarely the binding constraint in Queensland. Road access limits and the mass allowed on a specific trailer combination to your suburb usually decide how heavily a container can be loaded, so we check delivery feasibility before the box is packed, not after it lands.

Cost control

Where sea freight costs actually come from

An ocean rate quoted in isolation tells you very little. These are the lines that decide your landed cost.

  • Origin charges: export customs, terminal handling and documentation at the load port, which on FOB terms are yours to pay.
  • Ocean freight and surcharges: base rate plus bunker, congestion, peak season and equipment imbalance surcharges.
  • Destination charges: terminal handling, wharfage, port service and documentation fees at Brisbane.
  • Customs and biosecurity: entry lodgement, import processing charge, duty, GST and any inspection or treatment costs.
  • Transport and detention: cartage to your door, waiting time, and detention if the container is not returned inside free time.

Sea freight Brisbane FAQs

How long does sea freight take to Brisbane?

From the main Chinese ports allow roughly 13 to 20 days port to port, from South East Asia 12 to 21 days, from the US West Coast 20 to 28 days and from Northern Europe 35 to 45 days. Add origin cartage, Australian arrival processing and delivery for a true door-to-door figure.

Is FCL or LCL cheaper for my shipment?

LCL is usually cheaper below roughly 15 cubic metres, after which the per-cubic-metre cost of LCL tends to overtake a 20ft container. LCL also carries more handling, so fragile or high-value cargo sometimes justifies a container earlier than the maths alone suggests.

What is detention and how do I avoid it?

Detention is charged when you keep the carrier’s container beyond the agreed free time. It is avoided by planning the unpack before arrival, booking a return slot early, and knowing which empty park is nominated. We track free time on every FCL shipment.

Can a container be delivered to a site without a forklift?

Yes. A side-loader can place a container on the ground and collect it later, which suits sites without loading docks or heavy machinery. It costs more than a standard skel delivery, so it is worth deciding early.

Do you handle exports as well as imports?

Yes. We arrange export bookings, container packing, export declarations and documentation for Queensland exporters shipping out of Brisbane.
