Getting started

Getting started with importing

I have never imported before. Where do I start?

Start with the product, not the freight. Tell us what you want to buy and where from, and we will confirm the likely tariff classification, duty rate, biosecurity requirements and any permits — before you place the order. Then we work out the cheapest sensible way to move it. Getting this sequence right is what separates a smooth first import from an expensive education.

What is the smallest shipment you will handle?

A single carton by air freight, or roughly one cubic metre by LCL sea freight. There is no minimum account size.

Do I need an ABN or an import licence to import into Australia?

Australia has no general import licence, but commercial importers need an ABN, and specific goods require permits from the relevant agency. We identify permit requirements as part of quoting.

How long does the whole process take, realistically?

From placing an order in Asia to goods on your shelf, four to eight weeks is normal by sea. From the USA or Europe, six to twelve weeks. Air freight compresses the transit but not the supplier’s production time.

What does it cost to get a quote?

Nothing. Quoting and pre-purchase advice are free, and we do not tie quotes to a commitment.

Costs, duty and GST

How much will it cost to import my goods?

It depends on volume, weight, lane, mode and commodity. Rather than a guess, ask for a landed-cost quote covering freight, origin and destination charges, customs entry, duty, GST and delivery. Our freight costs guide lists every possible charge.

How is import duty calculated?

Duty is a percentage of the customs value of the goods, with the rate set by tariff classification and country of origin. Commonly 0% or 5%, and often 0% under a free trade agreement. See import duty and GST.

How is GST calculated on imports?

GST is 10% of the customs value plus duty plus international transport and insurance. If you are GST registered and the goods are for your business, it is generally claimable in your BAS.

Why was my invoice higher than my quote?

Legitimately, because actual duty and GST differed from the estimate, biosecurity intervened, or cargo measured larger than declared. Illegitimately, because charges were not disclosed. We itemise everything and mark estimates as estimates.

What are demurrage and detention?

Charges for leaving a container at the terminal or in your possession beyond the free period. They escalate daily and are almost entirely avoidable with pre-arrival clearance and a booked transport slot.

Modes, containers and volumes

Should I use sea freight or air freight?

Sea for anything heavy, bulky or low value per kilogram. Air when the cost of being late exceeds the freight premium, or when volume is under about one cubic metre. Splitting a shipment across both is often the smartest answer.

LCL or FCL?

Below roughly 12 to 15 cubic metres, LCL usually wins. Above that, FCL is normally cheaper and faster. We price both on borderline shipments.

How many pallets fit in a container?

Roughly 10 to 11 Australian standard pallets in a 20ft and 20 to 21 in a 40ft, floor loaded. See container sizes and types.

How is air freight weight calculated?

On chargeable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000).

Can you ship oversized or very heavy items?

Yes — flat rack, open top, breakbulk and RORO. See oversized freight and project cargo.

Customs, biosecurity and compliance

Do I need a customs broker?

Not legally, but practically yes for commercial cargo. Classification, valuation and biosecurity rules are detailed and errors are the importer’s liability. See customs clearance.

What is biosecurity and why does it affect me?

Australia screens imports for pests, diseases and contamination. Timber packaging, plant and animal material, soil on used machinery, and food-related goods all attract conditions. Handled before shipment it is routine; discovered on arrival it is expensive.

Why is my container being inspected?

Selection can be risk-based, random, or triggered by the commodity, origin or packaging. We manage the inspection, arrange any treatment and keep you informed of cost and timing.

What documents do I need for every import?

At minimum a commercial invoice and packing list. Depending on the goods you may also need a certificate of origin, fumigation or treatment certificate, permits, or dangerous goods documentation. Consistency between documents matters as much as their existence.

Can you review whether I have overpaid duty?

Yes. Misclassification and missed free trade agreement claims are common, and refunds may be available within statutory time limits.

Working with us

Do you handle both imports and exports?

Yes. See freight forwarding for imports and exporting from Australia for outbound.

Which ports and airports do you cover?

All major Australian commercial ports including Brisbane, Port Botany, Melbourne, Fremantle, Adelaide and Darwin, plus the major air gateways. Delivery is Australia-wide including regional and remote sites.

Do you offer cargo insurance?

We can arrange marine cargo insurance. Carrier liability is limited by weight rather than value, so uninsured losses are typically paid at a fraction of goods value.

Can you deal directly with my overseas supplier?

Yes, and we prefer to. We chase cargo-ready dates and request documents in the format we need, which removes a great deal of work from you.

Do you move household goods as well as commercial cargo?

Yes, as a secondary service — our focus is commercial freight for Australian businesses. For household goods, see personal effects shipping. Domestic Australian removals are outside our freight forwarding services.

How do I get started?
