Shipping Between Australia and India — Freight, Customs and AI-ECTA

India is one of Australia’s fastest-growing trade relationships, and since AI-ECTA came into force the duty position on many goods has improved substantially. Pharmaceuticals, textiles, stone, chemicals and engineering goods inbound; wool, cotton and pulses outbound.

At a glance

The Australia–India lane in numbers

India is a large and geographically dispersed origin, which is the first thing to understand about this lane. A supplier in Gujarat, a supplier in Tamil Nadu and a supplier in West Bengal are on entirely different routings with different transit times and different service frequencies. The second thing is that the Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, in force since late 2022, has materially improved the duty position on a great deal of Indian-origin goods — and a lot of importers have not adjusted their claims accordingly.

Ports and routing

Which Indian port, and why it matters more here than elsewhere

India’s size means the load port decision has a bigger effect on your transit time and cost than on most lanes. Inland haulage in India can be long, slow and expensive, so shipping from the wrong port to save a little on the ocean rate is a false economy.

Nhava Sheva (JNPT) near Mumbai and Mundra in Gujarat are the principal west coast gateways and handle the largest share of container volume, serving the northern and western industrial regions. Chennai and Tuticorin serve Tamil Nadu and the southern manufacturing belt, and are often the better option for textile and engineering cargo from the south. Cochin serves Kerala. Kolkata and Haldia serve the east, with draft restrictions that limit vessel size.

Direct services to Australia exist but a substantial proportion of India–Australia cargo transhipes, commonly through Singapore, Port Klang, Colombo or a Middle Eastern hub. Whether your booking is direct or transhipped can be a week of difference, so it is worth asking rather than assuming.

  • Nhava Sheva and Mundra for northern and western India — best frequency and vessel size
  • Chennai and Tuticorin for Tamil Nadu and the southern industrial belt
  • Cochin for Kerala; Kolkata and Haldia for eastern India, with draft limits
  • Confirm direct versus transhipped — Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang are the usual hubs
  • Inland haulage is significant — the nearest suitable port is usually the right port

What moves

What we move on the India lane

India’s Australia-bound export mix is unusually diverse, spanning pharmaceuticals, heavy stone, textiles and engineering goods.

CargoDirectionFreight and compliance note
Pharmaceuticals and genericsIndia → AustraliaTherapeutic goods regulation applies; frequently air freighted; temperature control on some products
Textiles, apparel and home textilesIndia → AustraliaHigher general duty rates make an AI-ECTA origin claim particularly valuable
Granite, marble and engineered stoneIndia → AustraliaExtremely dense — container weight limits bind well before cube. Slab crating and bracing are critical
Chemicals, dyes and intermediatesIndia → AustraliaDangerous goods classification from the safety data sheet; permits on some substances
Engineering goods, castings and fastenersIndia → AustraliaClassification precision on repeat lines; check the TCO register on equipment
Auto componentsIndia → AustraliaGrowing category; origin rules matter where inputs are imported into India for assembly
Furniture and handicraftsIndia → AustraliaTimber, cane and bark attract biosecurity treatment and certification requirements
Food, spices and riceIndia → AustraliaAustralian import conditions, biosecurity and labelling requirements
Wool, cotton and hidesAustralia → IndiaContainerised and bulk; export certification
Pulses, lentils and chickpeasAustralia → IndiaContainerised; Indian import conditions and fumigation requirements
Mining and agricultural equipmentAustralia → IndiaFlat rack or breakbulk; biosecurity cleaning on used plant
Stone and granite are the standout operational risk on this lane — get the container weight and the crating right.

Duty

AI-ECTA and the duty position

The Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) entered into force on 29 December 2022 and covers a broad range of goods traded between the two countries. For Australian importers it has meaningfully improved the duty position on many Indian-origin goods, with tariff elimination for a large share of lines and staged reductions on others.

This matters because a lot of Indian-origin imports fall in categories with above-average general duty rates — textiles, clothing, home textiles and certain manufactured goods. Where a general rate is well above 5%, a successful origin claim is a substantial saving, and on a repeat program it compounds every shipment.

The practical requirement is the same as for any origin claim: the goods must satisfy the AI-ECTA origin rules, and you must hold the documentary evidence the agreement requires at the time of import. Because the agreement is relatively recent, some Indian suppliers are still becoming familiar with the documentation, so it is worth being explicit about what you need rather than assuming it will arrive. We tell your supplier exactly what to provide before shipment. See how FTA duty claims work.

Planning

Planning the India lane

This lane rewards planning more than most, because the variables are larger.

  • Diwali in October or November closes a great deal of Indian manufacturing and slows logistics for a week or more. Fourth-quarter and Christmas cargo needs to move before it.
  • Monsoon season from June to September affects west coast port operations and inland transport, and can add unpredictable days.
  • Confirm direct or transhipped routing at booking — this is the single biggest lead-time variable on the lane.
  • Stone and granite need weight planning. A 40ft container of slabs will exceed legal mass long before it fills the cube. Two 20ft containers is usually the answer.
  • Be explicit about AI-ECTA documentation. The agreement is recent; do not assume your supplier knows what Australia requires.
  • Timber, cane and handicraft components attract biosecurity treatment and certification requirements.
  • Build a longer buffer than you would on a North Asian lane. Transit variability here is genuinely higher.

For dense cargo such as stone, read container shipping on weight limits, and construction freight for the Australian standards and certification side.

FAQ

India freight questions

How long does shipping from India to Australia take?

Roughly 18 to 28 days port to port, but the range on this lane is wider than most because of the size of the country and the frequency of transhipment. Cargo from Nhava Sheva or Mundra on a direct service sits at the shorter end; cargo from eastern India transhipping through Colombo or Singapore sits at the longer end. Add about a week at each end for collection, clearance and delivery.

Does AI-ECTA reduce duty on Indian imports?

Yes, for a broad range of goods. The Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement came into force on 29 December 2022 and eliminates or reduces duty on a large share of tariff lines. It is particularly valuable on textiles, clothing and home textiles where general rates are higher than the 5% that applies to most goods. As with any origin claim, the goods must meet the agreement’s origin rules and you must hold the required evidence at the time of import.

Which Indian port should I ship from?

Generally the one closest to your supplier, because Indian inland haulage is long and expensive. Nhava Sheva and Mundra serve the north and west with the best frequency and largest vessels; Chennai and Tuticorin serve the southern industrial belt; Cochin serves Kerala; Kolkata and Haldia serve the east with draft restrictions. Also ask whether the service is direct or transhipped, because that can matter more than the port choice.

How do I ship granite and stone slabs safely?

Weight first: stone is dense enough that a 40ft container reaches its legal mass limit at a fraction of its volume, so 20ft containers are the norm and often two of them. Crating and bracing are the second issue — slabs need A-frames or purpose-built crates properly secured, because slab damage in transit is almost always a bracing failure rather than a handling failure. We check the loading plan and the weight before the container is booked.

How does Diwali affect shipping schedules?

Diwali falls in October or November and closes a great deal of Indian manufacturing, with logistics slowing for a week or more either side. It coincides awkwardly with the Australian pre-Christmas window, so cargo needed for the fourth quarter should be produced and shipped well ahead of it. We flag the dates when we quote.

Can you handle pharmaceutical imports from India?

Yes, and the freight is usually the simpler part. Many pharmaceutical products are regulated therapeutic goods in Australia and their importation and supply is governed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration framework, which needs to be resolved before shipment. Some products also require temperature control in transit. We identify the requirements at quoting and specify the cold chain where one is needed — see our medical and life sciences page.

Do you handle Australian exports to India?

Yes. Pulses and lentils, wool, cotton, hides, food products and equipment all move in that direction. We handle the export declaration and EDN, arrange origin documentation so your buyer can claim the AI-ECTA rate, and manage fumigation and export certification requirements, which are significant for agricultural commodities going into India.
